Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis — and in thousands of other plants, fruits, and flowers. They're what give each strain its distinct smell and flavor. Myrcene smells earthy and musky. Limonene is bright and citrusy. Pinene smells like a pine forest. Terpenes don't just affect aroma — research suggests they work alongside cannabinoids in what's called the "entourage effect," potentially shaping the overall experience of a strain.

The entourage effect is the theory that cannabinoids and terpenes work better together than in isolation. THC and CBD are the most well-known cannabinoids, but a full-spectrum plant contains over 100 different cannabinoids plus dozens of terpenes. Scientists believe these compounds interact synergistically — meaning the whole plant may produce effects that isolated compounds can't replicate on their own. It's one reason why strain selection matters so much to experienced consumers.

Plants don't use all light equally. Chlorophyll absorbs red light (around 660nm) and blue light (around 450nm) most efficiently. Blue spectrum drives compact, leafy vegetative growth. Red spectrum triggers flowering and bud development. Proper curing in sealed jars for 4–8 weeks after drying allows chlorophyll to break down and terpenes to fully develop — the difference between harsh, flat flower and smooth, flavorful medicine.

Even with perfect nutrients, a plant can't absorb what it needs if the pH is off. In soil, the ideal root zone pH is 6.0–7.0. In coco coir or hydro, it's tighter: 5.5–6.5. Outside these ranges, nutrient lockout occurs — the plant shows deficiency symptoms even when nutrients are present. Calcium and magnesium lock out above pH 7.0. The popular idea that indica = sedating and sativa = energizing is an oversimplification that the cannabis industry is slowly moving away from. Modern research suggests that the cannabinoid and terpene profile of a strain — not its physical structure — is what drives effects. A high-myrcene "sativa" may feel more relaxing than a low-myrcene "indica." Breeders and dispensaries are increasingly shifting to terpene-forward labeling to give consumers more accurate information about what they're actually getting.
